Holy guacamole was June ever a busy month. Every weekend had 3 separate events or things to prepare for, and only a handful of those I knew about in advance. So now I'm woefully behind with Scarlett's birthday post, but I can breathe a tiny bit easier knowing that June is over.
Scarlett wanted to have her birthday party at the house this year (like every year) and do lots of different outdoor/water activities. She has been lucky with the weather the last 3 birthday parties, but unfortunately that wasn't the case this year (although this made my race the morning of her birthday party infinitely more bearable). She planned her whole party down to the minute, with plans for both sunshine and rain, including the food, and all games/activities which included a pinata and pass the parcel. Scarlett is a girl who loves to play and is able to fill any empty time with a new game.

Her birthday happened to be the last day of school this year, so she wanted to stick around for it, instead of taking the afternoon off to hang out with me. We did have Rocky Road (her favourite ice cream), and Lily would not stop blowing out her candle. We made up for it by going for breakfast and pedicures the next day, followed by an afternoon at the pool with Grandma and Grandpa. A few days later she was baptized and we were able to share that special day with both sets of grandparents.

Scarlett has just hit 40lbs. I know she's growing because her pants are shrinking but only in the legs. Thank goodness it's short weather. It's a good thing she's so tiny because I realized we would need something white to go under her baptism dress. She was able squeeze into a pair of size 2 white shorts to wear underneath😂
Despite her tiny stature, she is not someone you want to cross. She has a lot of fire and she isn't afraid of a slow burn if it makes revenge that much sweeter. She likes to be the boss and run the show in every way possible.
Her favourite food to eat, in general, is fruit. I'd be packing her lunch and she would just give me a long list of fruits, a few veggies, and maybe one carb or protein option. And sometimes I would have to tell her she couldn't just have fruit for lunch. More often than not, her "fun snacks" would come home, but she would have always eaten the healthy stuff. However she does have a wicked sweet tooth. Whenever we let them decorate cookies, cupcakes etc. Scarlett's goal is to turn her's into a "sugar abomination" (her words, not mine).
We found out, thanks to strep, that like me she has an allergy to amoxicillin.
Scarlett's personality has evolved, for lack of a better word, so much in the last two years. She was a very shy, reserved, mild mannered girl (in public at least) until about grade 1. She had an amazing teacher in grade 1 who seemed to help her come out of her shell and she made a lot of friends. So many friends that she was going to a birthday party almost every weekend between April and June. This year was no different. Between April and June she went to 6-8 birthday parties. She is good at making friends with both boys and girls, and she spent a lot of lunches in the office keeping a boy in her class company who found it too noisy to eat in the classroom. Her teacher remarked on her report card that she often had the class laughing with her contributions in discussions and that she had a way of engaging the whole class.

Scarlett's English reading has also really blossomed this year. Her French was already above grade level and her English caught up well. We finished reading all 8 Ramona and Beezus books and started Judy Moody at Easter.
She also gained a lot of confidence in both swimming and gymnastics this year, and was able to advance levels in both. She is thinking about taking violin this September.
She is still very much a mama's girl. She gives me about 3848 hugs before bed and tells me with every one "love you mum". She gets teary eyed if you talk about her growing up and moving out. She will probably just end up being our neighbour one day.
Scarlett is often the first kid asleep. I really wish the others had her quick to fall asleep genes. She also had the unfortunate habit of falling asleep on the bus and more than once I had to chase the bus to the next stop to get her off, especially when Isaac and Mia were in Hawaii and not there to wake her up.
She went through a stage where she was telling me all these life hacks she learned including, using a deflated balloon to keep your toothbrush clean while traveling, putting socks on the toilet seat to keep it clean, and using dental floss to perfectly apply lipstick. Needless to say I decided to forego her advice.
One of the best things about Scarlett is her imagination. It is wild and boundless, and sometimes just a little morbid. I stumbled upon this scene of decapitated babies one day...
One day after school she told me "Radish" died. Radish was literally just a hand drawn worm on a crumpled scrap of paper that her best friend drew for her in kindergarten. Why she had this paper for two years, I do not know. Apparently they buried the picture under a slide in the park and marked it with a stick. Fast forward a few months later when she brings me unfortunate news again after school.
"Mum, sad news. Dark chocolate killed all the squirmy wormies."
"Who are the squirmy wormies and why are they sad?"
"They're Radish's kids. Dark chocolate is a master killer. Also it's a name. We tried to bury Cotton Candy but could only find half her body. We were looking for the stick to bury her with Radish but we couldn't find it. Ady thinks a ghost took it to fix her."
Me left wondering why my daughter's recess sounds like a Criminal Minds episode.
In keeping with her fantastic imagination, she has all sorts of games and "universes" that she pulls from to keep herself occupied. Anything can be something to play with. She uses old candy wrappers to make clothes for her barbies, bits of unused tissue or white paper are bandages for the accident prone dolls, popsicle sticks get bent in half and turned into "hair straighteners". Every barbie has a name and a backstory. She had an unpopped water balloon that she intended on treating like a baby and when Mia popped it, told me she didn't want to play with Mia because "she killed Darrell".
She likes to have "collections" of various items- not unlike a magpie. One of her hiding spots is in the compartment beside her spot in the van. Once when her brother was sitting there and rifling through it, she yelled at him "No, not my stash of who-hash!". It is now only referred to as her "stash of who-hash".
She's creative and likes anything where she can build or design.
She's spunky and sassy and we love everything she's about.
