Life with Isaac

Isaac is 2.5 and he is as much fun and he is challenging. He is sharp as a tack. Nothing gets by this kid. No sneaking a bite of dessert, no whispered conversations he's not supposed to hear. It's like he has this sonar/radar going 24/7. Gordon and I spell half our sentences out sometimes just to avoid saying trigger words like "outside", "treat", "snack", "movie" etc. We like to avoid conflict when we can and we have such a reactive, explosive (in a good way...most of the time) little boy that if he hears about something he wants, it's gotta happen right there, right then, or it's full on world war 3.

He has boundless amounts of energy, and only takes 2 maybe 3 naps a week. It's easier for me to just forgo nap time and put him to bed early, then fight with him to nap for an hour. It's all about picking your battles. He could spend all day outside.
Jumping on trampoline at grandma and grandpa's
Ice fishing with daddy
At the ward ice skating activity
Play time at the flooded park
He is a huge morning/early afternoon eater. So if he finished or has seconds for supper, I know it was really good, because he doesn't eat that much later in the day. A typical morning until about 2pm of eating for him can look like this...

-three bowls of cereal
-whole cup of fruit/veg (loves carrots and peppers)
-half an apple
-half a cucumber...we're talking big english cucumbers
-two sandwiches
-another snack

He loves pasta and pizza, so those are his big suppers. He also loooooooves smoothies and can drink more than I can.

His loves Tangled, Toy Story, Star Wars, Cars, Planes, Big Hero 6, monster's university... basically anything with sword fights, lightsaber fights etc
He loves to quote movies and will randomly exclaim different lines. Sometimes we'll be watching a movie and I'll hear something he's been saying all week, but I didn't know where it was from until then.

His favourite books are The Bunny Rabbit Show by Sandra Boynton, and Thomas' Snowsuit by Robert Munsch

He picks up on songs easily and will randomly start singing things like "jingle bells" or "Let it go! Let it go!". He also knows primary and nursery rhyme songs. He's learning to sing ABCs, but has known the alphabet for months.

He can count to ten, but usually forgets 7.

He can write the letter I. He was drawing on the whiteboard one day and says "I did an 'I'". So I went over to see and sure enough he had.

He is in underwear all day, for outings and naps (when he decides to take them). He's still learning to be consistent with #2s, but he's getting better, and has gone on his own without cueing so I have hope! One day I was skyping my mum and Isaac went to the bathroom. After a minute he runs out and says "I WENT POO!". That was one of the proudest moments of my mothering life haha.

He is the master of distraction-or thinks he is. His favourite phrases are "close your eyes!" when he doesn't want us to see something. Or whenever we ask him to do something he doesn't want to do "I'm just [insert completely random activity that has nothing to do whatsoever with what we asked him to]."

Big brother moments
-one morning I woke up to Mia chatting away, but ended falling back asleep. 20 minutes later I woke up again, surprised she wasn't screaming her lungs out at me. When I went to check, Isaac had thrown all his blankets and toys in the crib and the two were rolling around in there playing.

-he's quick to give her Pinky bear or ask "What's wrong with you?" if she's upset

-he's also quick in telling her what to do and what she wants "Mia you don't want to go. You want to play with me!". "Mia you don't want to play with [insert toy Isaac wants]. You want [insert toy he doesn't want]"."Mia likes this [movie Isaac wants to watch]. She wants to watch it!"

-one day we set up the tent which is red and yellow. They were both playing in it and Isaac says to Mia "See that's red light. That means stop. See? I'll show ya!"

-another boy tried to take a toy from Mia one day and Isaac yells at him "No you don't take it away from her!" I guess only he's allowed to have toy taking privileges...

He loves to pretend and use his imagination
-things that are swords: dusting wand, vacuum wand (attached to his back in the picture below as per Star Wars), hockey sticks, toilet paper rolls, pencils etc
-things that are guns: banana guard, toy drill, stormtrooper gun
There are lots of parents I'm sure who would balk at the idea that my son sword fights, and runs a
around the house shooting "bad guys". Do we have rules about swords and guns? Yes. Do I need to explain them to you? No. Why? Because I am tired of feeling like I need to justify every little decision I make as a parent, in order to feel accepted and to feel like a good mother to my children. End mini-rant that I could make not so mini, but that is another post for another time.

-he'll hear a noise and whisper "You hear that? Must be monsters! Let's go check it out!" Then he takes my hand and leads me to the monsters-usually under my bed-and then tells me "We gotta get them!" He then dispatches of the monsters in whatever way he sees fit at the time.

-he pretends our overturned kitchen chairs (purposefully overturned to prevent little sister climbing on them) are motorcycles or cars and verbalizes every step of driving them

-he sat down with his Woody and Buzz toy by our water bottles and says to me "they're having sacrament!" (we were just at church that morning). He pretended to give them each a piece of bread and drink of water. I asked if they were being reverent as he says "yep, they are!"

Recent laughs
-We were driving home and Isaac yells all of a sudden "My [boy part]!" I asked him what was wrong with it and he yells "IT'S FALLING OFF!!!". I'm surprised I didn't get into an accident because I burst out laughing so hard.

-We had the missionaries over for dinner, and after I asked Isaac to get ready for a bath since he was covered in food. Two minutes later he comes streaking across the living room in front of the elders butt naked and cackling.

-approved dinners "I like that supper. It's tasty." disapproved dinners "You like that supper. I don't like it. It's not tasty".

-I came home one day and the vacuum was out. I asked why, and Gordon said he vacuumed because he thought it was messy. I had just vacuumed the night before so thought that was exceptionally odd. Isaac upon hearing the conversation cleared it all up by saying "Daddy can't vacuum all the popcorn up!" Guess they had a little spill I wasn't supposed to know about...

I could spend dozens more hours writing stories and blurbs about him. As much as he tries my patience at times with his incredibly headstrong will , he makes my days exciting, spontaneous and full of energy.

Before you know it, it will be Christmas again!

This post is so long overdue, but with the babies changing so quickly, I find myself needing to update about them more frequently so posts about things that have happened already get pushed to the back burner. I kinda just want to say "oh well" and leave it be, but I'm trying to do a little bit of family history every week, and that means preserving our family memories!

Rewind the clock a few months to Christmas time-plenty of snow, my floor covered in pine needles, having a dance party to Christmas songs in the living room with the kiddos.

Christmas was less stressful for me this year. I started making a list of gift ideas a few months before, and planned to get some good black Friday deals-which I did. I was realistic in what we had space for, and tried to stick with gifts that wouldn't outgrow their use too fast.

We had plenty of fun celebrating the Christmas season here before we left town!

Memories
-going to see the lights at the Legislature and walking down to the high level bridge with Isaac
-building a gigantic snowman (this was post Christmas) that Isaac named "big snowman"
-Isaac finding chocolate in his gumboot on St Nicholas day, and then checking everyone's shoes periodically for the rest of the day
-Isaac learning Jingle Bells
-spending each family home evening talking about a different part of the Christmas story with Isaac
-the tree not falling over for the first year
-the kids not crying during their first Santa picture
-Isaac running out of our bedroom yelling "I FOUND STORMTROOPER!!". I had accidentally left their Christmas present stash on our floor. At the end of the day, we snuck it back from him, and rewrapped it for Christmas. Nothing could quite compare to his initial excitement though.

It was my family's turn for Christmas, so we drove down to Calgary the weekend before (after I had stayed up for 3 hours after the kids were in bed, trying to rid my house of all the pine needles!).

Memories
-going to see the Christmas light display at confederation park
-seeing the nativity pageant and Isaac's fascination with the star
-having our German Christmas eve dinner in memory of my granny-frankfurters and potato salad...and the Jolie family addition of spring rolls (we're not sure how they made it into our Christmas eve menu, but they did once and have forever been a part of it since)
-Isaac making gingerbread with granny
-Isaac and grampy playing their first game of floor hockey in the hallway
-Mia taking the entire Christmas day to open her presents and eat the wrapping paper
-skyping with my missionary sisters at the same time
-Isaac actually enjoying opening his presents for the first time
Opening stormtrooper for the second time

We spent New Year's with Gordon's family in Cranbrook, and .

Memories
-Isaac's first time sledding
-Isaac and Mia first meeting Jett. Isaac chased him around the kitchen table yelling "NEMO! COME BACK HERE NEMO!" Mia wasn't a fan. To be fair he probably looks like a bear to her.
-ringing in the New Year with way too much food, friends, and fireworks. We let Isaac stay up, but he cried during the fireworks and watched from the window. The story as he told it for the rest of week was "I no like fireworks. They're scary. Too loud. Isaac cried."
-having our traditional New Year's dinner of steak (and kidney) pie courtesy of Gordon's gran. She always makes an onionless one for me. Can't ask for much more than that!
-plenty of board game fun: apples to apples, pictionary, boggle, trivial pursuit
-cross country skiing with Gordon, falling on my pole, and bruising the size of grapefruit on my leg
-Isaac pilfering chocolates every time we turned around. After we came home, he saw a Pot of Gold chocolate commercial on TV and says "Grandpa Nish have that. I eat them!"

After 2.5 weeks, we returned home with way too many toys, chocolates, and extra pounds (at least I did!). But you can never have too many wonderful memories!

28 things you didn't know about my hubs!

Gordon celebrated his 28th (shhh!!) birthday Monday. I had planned for a crepe breakfast, and then his favourite dinner-homemade sweet and sour pork-, along with some chocolate oreo cupcakes. I hadn't planned for being sick with some stomach bug and barely being able to stand because of the nausea. Everything was supposed to happen on the Sunday since he has a late class Monday, and doesn't get home until after the kids are in bed. So lucky him had his birthday celebrations spread out over 4 days. We went out for sushi Saturday night (which did not help my tummy), but I managed to feel well enough Sunday night to make crepes for supper. Monday was his birthday so he got to open his presents, and we moved dinner and cupcakes to Tuesday. They were chocolate oreo cupcakes with oreo whipped cream frosting. And they were better than they sound. You should have seen the carnage on my kitchen floor after my two munchkins were finished.

This post is about my wonderfully patient, loving and funny husband, who rarely gets bragged about on the blog. The kids can share the limelight with their father for once.

1) He only likes dark chocolate
2) His celebrity crushes are Uma Thurman, Natalie Portman and whatsherface from the Walking Dead...brown hair...Lauren??? I obviously don't share in his love for that show
3) He's absurdly good at remembering the most random historical dates, facts and trivia. Makes for good jeopardy and trivial pursuit competition.
4) He brushes his teeth for 5 minutes at a time.
5) He'll eat the same cereal every day until the box is finished.
6) He hates chocolate and fruit together
7) Before we had kids to listen for, he used to make me close the bedroom door all the way before going to sleep
8) He bites his lip when he's unsure of himself or feels awkward
9) He likes the Hobbit but hates LOTR
10) His dream car is a camaro
11) He's scared of bees/wasps
12) He is a computer whiz, and will obsessively try to solve any computer problem he comes across
13) He could have entire conversations sleep talking
14) He only drinks 2% milk
15) He pats his hand (or my hand if he's holding it) on his leg when he's talking to people he doesn't know very well-even on the phone
16) He has a big man-crush on Arnold Schwarzenegger
17) He is doing his Master's in Chemical Engineering
18) He served a 2 year mission in New York city for our church (the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints)
19) He is great at making up song lyrics on the spot
20) He used to be in Judo, and would love to take it up again
21) He has true green eyes
22) He sang "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" for me at our wedding reception, in front of 150+ guests. Lion King is my favourite movie and I was totally surprised.
23) He is really sensitive to toothpaste. I can only buy one kind-every other one has "burned" his mouth.
24) He used to be a baby about spicy food when we first got married-every other meal was "My mouth is on fire!!!", but now he regularly adds hot sauce to his dinner.
25) He lived in France on exchange for one year
26) He is so easy to cook for, and almost never complains about what I make
27) He loves doing family history
28) He is absolutely loved by his wife and kids (hopefully you already knew that!).

Here's to many more birthdays honey! Je t'adore!
