I feel like I haven't blogged in
forever even though it's only been three weeks. I
feel like know I'm going to forget something if I don't write it down.
Over the last few weeks Isaac
-figured out how to
climb up on the futon (and other objects...) and out of the grocery cart-why do only half have seatbelts?!?!?
-loves to
dance and doesn't discriminate between music from his toys, from TV commercials, or from sacrament meeting...
-plays
shy, especially when people come on strong in the beginning. He usually
pouts or tries to
hide his face. But once he's used to you he warms up pretty quick.
-has figured out how to
crawl under things, including the church benches.
**Funny story**
Isaac kept trying to crawl under the benches at church despite Gordon and I trying numerous ways to distract him/stop him. He isn't a quitter or easily deterred when he's bound and determined to do something, especially if it's something he knows we don't want him to do. So after crouching down and pulling him out from the our bench for the millionth time, I decided to just let him go at and see what happened. I pictured one of two scenarios: he would get picked up by somebody and entertained for a bit OR he would get scared at all the unfamiliar faces, come back and not attempt it again. Well he got two benches behind ours and the people on the bench were trying to get him to come out and sit with them. He looked at them, turned tail and crawled right back to our bench. He didn't try to leave again.
-understands quite a bit of what you say. He can point to my mouth and nose. And he can correctly pick between his toucan, frog, bunny and sheep stuffies depending on what you ask him for. Although he does highly favor the frog and will choose that before he listens to you about any other one.
-has my talent for pulling faces. He frequently makes goofy faces and has a million different smiles-the shy, the excited, the trouble-maker...
-stands really well on his own, especially if he has something in his hands to distract him. He's even started taking one or two steps in the past two days, if he's cruising in between furniture. His record is 15 seconds of standing, but it's hard to measure because as soon as he realizes what he's doing he finds something to hold onto or sits down...so it's possible he could stand longer but is still too chicken.
-killed his first spider. Spiders don't bother me so I usually just put them outside or ignore them if I see one. Isaac happened to see this one first, but every time he tried to touch it it would crawl away, so he started chasing it around. In the second it took me to get the video camera, I look over and this poor little spider is a little ball on the floor with my son sitting beside him. He had squished it. I guess I should have seen that coming.
Update on our goals!
-getting rid of the overnight bottle took about 3 nights of him whining for 15-25 minutes with Gordon and I having pillows over our ears. He caught on pretty quickly and hasn't had one in three weeks. We're back to sleeping through the night, with the rare need to soother him once in a while. Yay!!
-I thought getting him to sleep through the night again would be the hardest goal to tackle, but boy did bottle weaning take the cake on that one. I don't mean weaning him from formula, I mean getting rid of the actual bottles and having him drink from a sippy cup or a regular cup. I read lots of different suggestions, which were all fairly similar but they did not (and I mean DID NOT) work for Isaac and I. The first week was a battle war of wills between the two of us. I guess I can't blame him, since he's been exclusively bottle fed for so long but man I was determined he was going to kick the habit, my way or the highway. I'm the mom so I call the shots right? Well after one particularly frustrating dinner where I was trying to get him to drink from his cup and he kept swatting it from my hand, then whining non-stop, I lost it. My dinner was cold because I had been trying to feed him, a vein in my head was going to burst from the whining, so I picked up my plate when into the bathroom, closed the door and ate my dinner alone...on the toilet... Don't worry, Gordon had already taken over at this point, sensing my imminent meltdown. There I reevaluate how important this really was, and if it was worth my son and I getting this upset over. Nooooope. So I decided to use a different strategy, one much more guided by him, and less about imposing my will on him. And you know what? He is drinking formula from his cup at meals, and has gone from only drinking 5-10 mls, to 60 mls in less than a week. The best part? We're both happy (and I think there's a real chance he might actually be weaned from bottles by the time he's a year!!).
