Mr Personality

Mr man is developing such a little personality and is quite the character. He makes me laugh my head off almost every day and wonder where he picked up all of his little quirks. Here are some I-facts that I wrote down this week.
-He loves jumping in his jumperoo...now that he's actually figured out that it's for jumping. He can be in there for an hour at a time just bouncing away. My favourite part is when he gets tired and falls asleep mid-jump for a second then wakes up suddenly and starts bouncing away again
-He doesn't like his bumbo. He always arches his back trying to get out.
-EVERYTHING goes in his mouth. He can almost fit his whole fist in there (he has been practicing!). Actually "everything" is not quite accurate. There's a teething toy on his jumperoo that he will not stick in his mouth. It's like he knows he's allowed to chew on it so he doesn't want to ahah.
-He likes things touching his face when he sleeps, especially blankets
-He's starting to get consistent with sleeping through the night (8-6:30). Now if I just went to bed earlier I might not mind the 6:30 wake-up call so much...
-He's a screamer, especially when he's under his playmat. I don't know what the hanging toys do to him but boy does he give them a good telling-off.
-He now rolls over whenever he's on his tummy. He used to be very random in his rolling, but now he's figured out it's the only thing that gets him out of tummy time.
-When I'm cooking, he likes to be in his swing in the kitchen with me. I usually pretend I'm on food network and do a whole show for him.
-He was terrified of the noise Gordon made when blowing out the candles on the birthday cake. I actually had to take him into the other room because looking at Gordon made him cry.
-He giggles when I talk to him in a deep voice
-He loves "The Wheels on the Bus"

It was a very busy weekend yet again. Friday I had another incident with the burner (see my previous post about almost burning the place down) which resulted in some very burnt and stinky rice. I had done a bunch of prep for Gordon's birthday dinner the next day, and had cooked the rice in advance because fried rice cooks better when it's leftover. I turned on the stove to boil some water for bottles (are you having deja vu?) and AGAIN I turned on the wrong burner....with the pot of rice I cooked on it and AGAIN Gordon said "It smells like something is burning". Luckily I had just noticed my mistake and quickly removed the rice, but the damage was done. If you've never burnt rice before, please learn from my mistake and don't ever do it. It stinks something awful. The pot was brutal to clean. I ended up having to use baking soda with water and simmering it, but because of all the fizz it ended up boiling over all over the stove (on LOW heat). I should mention that I had tried boiling it with dish soap before this (it saved one of my pots before, not this time) and that had also boiled over and I had just finished cleaning it up. As funny as it is now, it was NOT funny at all on Friday. The only redeeming fact was that Isaac was down for the night so at least I didn't have him to contend with. I had to clean the stove and burners about five times because the baking soda water left a residue that drove me crazy. I did save my pot in the end, although it looks a little worse for wear now, but it is clean! This whole incident prompted Gordon to label the burners "FRONT" and "BACK" with duct tape. As if my kitchen needs to look any more ghetto.
For Gordon's birthday I made, at his request, egg rolls from scratch, ginger beef (his favourite) and fried rice. I also baked him a chocolate cake that I turned into an oreo-cream cake. Because the egg rolls and ginger are deep fried it was one messy messy dinner. I did dishes after dishes after dishes and ended up having to scrub the whole kitchen down to de-greasify it. The two+ hours of cooking and one+ hour of cleaning (not to mention the prepping the day before!), was most definitely a labour of love and I'm certainly glad Gordon's birthday doesn't come around more than once in a year!

The day I didn't burn the house down...and other things

It's been a busy week for Isaac and I. With a baby shower, immunizations, it being my monthly deep-clean this week, and the ever present errands to run, laundry to do and dinners to make has left me a little bit addled. Today was probably not the choicest day to try and be a mega multi-tasker since Isaac and I had a poor night last night. I had five wake-up calls, one of which resulted in him wanting to stay awake for 45 minutes at 1 in the morning, and then two false alarms. A false alarm is when he's awake and crying so I get up and make him a bottle and then I go in and he's asleep. False alarms aren't that common anymore since I've learned to only get up when he really starts to cry, but sometimes in the minute it takes me to get up and get his bottle, he decides to fall asleep. Guaranteed if I'd stayed in bed for that minute he would have still been crying. So needless to say both of us were kind of out of sorts today and I woke up with a bit of a sore throat which kicked my run in the butt. Boo. It also ruined Isaac's new and improved napping regimen.
As of this week instead of 2 hours awake, 30 minute cat nap, 5-6 times a day, he'll stay awake for 2.5-3 hours, take a 30-45 minute nap around 9:30-10am, a 2.5 hour nap at lunch time, and a final 20-30 min power nap at 4:30-5pm. Then he's in bed for about 8, sometimes 7:30 even. Even though I got used to his strictly cat napping routine, this one makes it so much easier for me to get stuff done...like have a full uninterrupted workout and shower after.
But I digress (because you're really all wondering about the whole burning the house down aren't you?). So to review, Isaac and I had a rough night that disrupted our normal groove. Then today I kept myself busy by dusting, running a few errands, and making dinner while trying to keep Isaac entertained in his swing in the kitchen with me, so Gordon could do homework. Isaac finally went down for his last nap and I was probably trying to multi-task too much for my tired brain. I was trying to finish dinner, do the dishes (I like to clean as I go), set the table and boil water for Isaac's bottles. It was the latter that resulted in today's little fiasco. I had just pulled out some homemade corn chips (which turned out to be stale) out of the oven and set the oven mitts on the stove. Then I turned on the burner to high to boil the water (and you already know where this story goes...)and went to play with Isaac in the living room. Gordon told me something smelt like it was burning and I just assumed it was a small piece of bread that had fallen to the bottom of the oven, but when I went to the kitchen both oven mitts were up in flames. I had turned on the front burner where the oven mitts were instead of the back burner where the pot was. I had an image flash through my mind of people putting out a kitchen fire by beating it with oven mitts (no clue where that came from ), then I tragically realize that unfortunately my oven mitts are on fire and a plan B is necessary. So I grab two tea towels and start beating it with them. Luckily Gordon had the presence of mind to tell me to throw them in water so I turned on the sink and he threw them in and then he went to yank the batteries out of our beeping smoke detector. You'd think being a nurse I could have reacted a little better under pressure than using tea towels to put out the fire, but I guess oven mitts aren't people. I might have done better with a person on fire, although I hope never to encounter that situation. The poor oven mitts were unsalvageable. So that's the story of how I didn't burn the house down. This was a day that would have ended in wine, if I believed in drinking wine, but since I don't it ended in drinking sprite mixed with orange juice. Don't judge me.

We had to open the windows to air out the place so we had to put Isaac in his snowsuit to keep him warm.
The burner post-fire.  It cleaned up nicely thank goodness. Notice the offending pot in the back.

Notice the poor pot holder in my hand. It used to be white...
In other things...
Isaac is 14lbs9oz and 25 inches long. He's measuring in the 25-50th percentile for all his measurements and he's perfectly following his growth curve.
In his cute little church outfit. Thanks Christa!
He has a long torso like his mum and the 3-6 month onesies are starting to pull when I do them up.
He has started giggling lots more and especially when he plays with his dad. I played peek-a-boo with him today while he was in his swing and he laughed the hardest I have ever heard him laugh.
He hasn't figured out he's supposed to jump in his jumperoo yet. He mostly just sits in it and tries to suck on everything within reach, including his seat.
Isaac almost always falls asleep on his own now. I just put him in his crib, turn on the sleep sheep full blast (it makes a water noise), he cuddles with it, pulls up his blanket and usually goes to sleep. Sometimes I have to do a bit of shooshing but rarely do I have to pick him up. I'm proud of him for being able to go to sleep without being swung or held all the time, and maybe a little proud of myself for helping him get there. I usually go in his room 10-15 minutes after he's asleep to turn down the sleep sheep and make sure he hasn't pulled the blanket over his face which he likes to do.

I entered my first race with a few of the nurses I work with. It's the Colour Me Rad 5k here in Edmonton, raising money for the Stollery Children's Hospital. I can't believe I've been running for almost 7 years and have entered a race. I had been wanting to do some 10ks and eventually a half marathon last summer, but I didn't think that was conducive to being pregnant.
Other than that I'm just enjoying being a full-time mama. My job is mostly behind the scenes but I get to spend all day with my little boy and I love it.
