Marriage: the most worthwhile fun you will ever have

This must be a record for shortest time elapsed between posts but I just have have have to post about this past weekend. Why? 1) I got to spend the whole thing with Gordon...by myself. 2) School hasn't quite gripped us in its claws yet. 3) We have so much fun together.
On Friday we went to donate blood. I'm one away from ten donations (you have to wait a min of 56 days in between each donation). If you qualify (most people do!) then you should definitely try it out. The nurses and volunteers are fabulous, and once you do it for the first time...you get kinda hooked. Maybe there's something about saving lives that is addicting. Who knows? After we went to clean the temple. Now cleaning isn't a regular date night occurrence, but cleaning the temple is obviously special a)because everyone is happy to be there b) it's already so clean you hardly have to lift a finger c) they have these little chore cards that tell you exactly what to clean and with which products. I think that is one of the best inventions. I am definitely implementing it with my kiddies in the future.
Saturday we went to teach a family with the Elders. We watched the Finding Faith in Christ dvd and they would ask us to pause it to explain something to them, and then rewind it so they could see it with their new understanding. We were able to help translate and explain some concepts using our French (it never ceases to come in handy). They were really interested and excited, and it's the first time I've ever been to a lesson like that. It was a really awesome spiritual experience. Later on in the day, we went to Ice on Whyte, the annual ice sculpture competition here in Edmonton. It wasn't quite as good as last year, but still incredible to see all the work and detailing that goes into a block of ice...especially in this brutal weather.
This is a picture from last year's competition. It was around -25 to -30 when we went but we had so much fun. After we came home, made nachos and watched the Flames game. The only thing that could have made the weekend better was if they won.... or if it was warmer.

Today we made waffles for breakfast with our new waffle iron, since church doesn't start until 1pm. Gordon taught a really good class to our 6 year olds about how they are children of God. We also decided to try our hand at Indian food and made tandoori chicken and chickpea curry, both of which were delicious. I am determined to learn how to do naan bread though since I'm yeast impaired. In keeping with our theme we watched The Jungle Book (Disney). We try to watch a different Disney movie every Sunday. They keep us down to earth and make us laugh.

This weekend we have a campout in our living room planned (you'd have to pay me...a lot....to make me campout outside). We're doing hot dogs and S'MORES and popcorn, building a fort and watching movies. I love that I can act like a little kid and forget about my big kid problems. I'm so happy that I'm married to my best friend who doesn't mind that I like being a kid again, just for a night. I love you honey.

Christmas with the Nishes

I'm afraid if I don't blog in the next week I will succumb to the oppressive tyrant that is school. Christmas vacation was almost too long (I'll probably never say that again...) so coming back has been a little bit painful. Having said that, Christmas was absolutely lovely. Gordon and I spent it with his family, and just like when I was growing up, stockings filled with goodies magically wound up on our beds when we woke up Christmas morning, the tree was stuffed with presents, and since Christmas was on a Sunday, we went to church (like every other Sunday) which made Christmas extra special. It was a good reminder that Christ should be the center of our Christmas.
We spent New Year's with my parents, since my sisters were off partying away, and had the most expensive and tasty steak I have ever had at Caesar's Steakhouse. Mmmm mmmm. Mum and dad then briefed us on how to play Rook, the game I fondly remember being played by my parents and grandparents late at night, and hearing the name calling from my bedroom while mum tried to keep everyone quiet so we could sleep. I'm sure it will get that intense one day... Dad and I can't really play games with each other without turning it into an event that would rival the Stanley cup final.
Gordon and I after dinner on NYE (please notice mum's expertly decorated tree in the back...)

NYE was also eventful because my best friend finally had a beautiful baby girl at 10:10 pm. She captured all our hearts....even Gordon.

Me and Joclyn :)
